If you know me personally or have been reading my posts for at least the past few months, it’s no secret how much I love our former North Park neighborhood.
This past Spring when we realized we were going to have to leave our beloved neighborhood, we (or at least I) were filled with incredible sadness. Not only, had North Park been our home for eight years, but all of our favorite places had become our second homes that we would have to leave as well. Of course that’s silly because we still visit our old ‘hood often, but those favorite places are no longer going just a short walk away.
So, this post is dedicated to our favorite neighborhood and our favorite places within it. These are the places that we would pick to visit if we had an entire day or afternoon to hit them all and the places I always recommend when people ask me where to go in North Park.
Caffe Calabria – This is the coffee shop we most frequented in our old neighborhood. I still crave their cappuccinos and paninis. This place is also a hit with locals because if you get there at the right (or maybe I should say the wrong time?), the line can go out the door. They also have North Park’s first “parklet” right outside, so you can enjoy your coffee in a nice setting while you people watch.
Dark Horse Coffee Roasters – This place is newer to the neighborhood and is great if you need to get your drink quick. Unlike Caffe Calabria, there’s not much sitting room to hang out, so we generally grab a coffee and head to the park or walk around the neighborhood. I love the donuts they have and even though I always tell myself I’m not going to get one, I always do. Oh, and I really like their iced tea, too!
Communal Coffee – This shop is the new kid on the block and has really taken off. It’s not in the center of North Park, but is still always packed. They share the space with a flower shop, so while you wait for your drink you can get all googly-eyed over the gorgeous flowers and great gifts they sell. Get your phone ready, too, because you’ll want to Instagram every last nook and cranny of the space.
The Mission – This place was always our go-to when we lived in the neighborhood, and still is (if we wake up early enough to beat the crowd). We’ve tried most things on the menu and haven’t been unhappy with anything. Our go-to is one blueberry pancake for Cecilia and Travis and I split the chicken apple sausage and eggs. Oh, and you HAVE TO have their potatoes. We always talk about how we want to make them at home and literally compare every other restaurant’s breakfast potatoes to theirs.
Nomad Donuts – This is not your run-of-the-mill donut shop. They have an incredible selection of the most unique flavors you could imagine. They often sell out, so be sure to get there early to get your pick!
Urban Solace – The Bluegrass Brunch is such a fun experience, so be sure to get a seat outside on the patio so you can enjoy it to the fullest. Urban Solace is another place we used to go to ALL. THE. TIME. We’ve had most things on the menu and have yet to be bummed out. Just be ready for large portions of amazing comfort food!
CASUAL/KID FRIENDLY LUNCH OR DINNER
Waypoint Public – You can’t get much more family-friendly than Waypoint Public – they have a gated play area for right inside filled with tons of toys, books and a projector screen where they show movies. We loved walking there for happy hour to beat the crowds and enjoy their drink and food deals. Not only do we love their menu, but Cecilia always devours whatever we order for her from their kid menu.
URBN Pizza – We love the pizza, wings and brussels sprouts here! This place is huge, so we generally sit in the back so Cecilia has space to run around and not get in the way of the servers bustling around. They also have great cocktails if you’re in the mood!
Carnitas Snack Shack – This place was in VERY close walking distance to our old apartment and we have eaten there countless times and taken most of our family to eat there. We love everything on the menu, but I especially enjoy their fries and carnitas tacos. This place is crazy popular and the wait can get long if you go at a busy time, but they have a gorgeous outdoor seating area for you to enjoy while you wait.
GROWN-UPS ONLY DINNER
The Smoking Goat – One of my best meals in recent memory was our first date night after Cecilia when we went to The Smoking Goat. The service was absolutely impeccable and the food hits it right on the nose each time. You can’t go wrong with duck fat truffle fries or any of their desserts.
Hipcooks – Now, I may be a little biased because I used to run this location of the cooking school, but Hipcooks really is a great adult night out. If you’re looking for hands-on cooking classes, this place can’t be beat. I’ve taken my fair share of cooking classes and the instruction and ambiance at Hipcooks are top-notch.
Hammonds Gourmet Ice Cream – A must-stop place when we’re in North Park. Not only is the ice cream tasty, but the best part is that Hammonds offers tasting flights of their flavors, so you can pick a few that you want to taste and get them on mini cones. Absolutely genius idea!
Pigment – My favorite North Park store! I could browse Pigment for hours and want to buy every single thing. They have a great selection of paper goods, candles, jewelry, food items, home decor and more. It’s such a gorgeous store and is a must-visit!
North Park Farmer’s Market – Happening every Thursday afternoon, this market has recently moved from its previous location and has grown a ton! Cecilia and I used to visit it when it was just a few stalls and now it covers three blocks in the center of North Park. Get the produce you need to make dinner (or just to snack on!) and buy goods from local artists and businesses all-in-one place!
North Park Nursery – The nursery is attached to Communal Coffee, so you can grab a cup of your favorite drink then head on next store to browse. I’ve gotten many plants and seeds for my garden and even got our orange tree for our new house there, so I could take some of North Park with us to our new place.
Verbatim Used Bookstore – Verbatim has quickly become one of our must-stop places when we visit North Park. It recently opened and has a great selection of used books. They also have a wonderful kids section with little chairs and tons of books and toys to entertain the littles, so Travis and I switch off playing with Cecilia while the other one browses.
Replay Toys – Another newer addition to the neighborhood is this great used toy store. They have a HUGE selection and variety of toys at great prices. Be prepared for your kiddos to go crazy!
Disclaimer: I was not compensated by any of the above establishments to include them in this post. I just love all of these places and wanted to share them with you! Thank you for reading! 🙂
