Our leading lady in this book, Alice Pearse, is a married mom of three living in the suburbs who is trying to balance her home and personal life with her work life. At the outset of the book, Alice seems to have her work-life balance in check, but soon her husband loses his job and she is left to pick up the pieces and become the breadwinner her family depends on. This means she needs to find a full-time job and relinquish the time she spends with her children, husband and family. She finds what seems like an ideal job that is intellectually satisfying and in a field that she loves. Overtime her job evolves into something she didn’t sign up for and with work, family and friendship tensions on the rise, she must make a choice between financial security and providing what her family needs and following her heart.
With where I am in my life, Alice is a highly relatable character who I had empathy for because she’s facing the classic struggle of whether we can “have it all.” This book deals with the ups and downs of life and the quest for true happiness with life and love. There is a highly emotional part of the book (I won’t give away the circumstances), but Elisabeth Egan’s writing evoked true emotions from me and I was in tears in my dark bedroom while reading at 11 o’clock at night. This book is also about taking leaps, following your instincts and realizing that even those instincts you so believed can lead you down the wrong path. While this can deal you a devastating blow, you always end up where you’re supposed to be and those times when you fall flat on your face can be a learning experience.
The book is a light read while at the same time covering some important issues we all face and I recommend it to you!
