Sixteen books down, eight more to go before I reach my 2017 goal of reading 24 books!
Mr. Churchill’s Secretary is the first book in the Maggie Hope mystery series by Susan Elia MacNeal. When we meet our leading lady, she has just landed a job at No. 10 Downing Street working for the newly sworn-in Winston Churchill. It is 1940 and World War II is raging across Europe. In her work, Maggie is privy to classified information and finds herself in the middle of a mystery and an assassination plot on the prime minister.
This book was suggested to me by Goodreads and I’m really glad I decided to read it. I am a sucker for a good book series and enjoy anything and everything having to do with Great Britain and those close to the royal family. I also love learning more about what the world was like during World War II and this book combines all of those things. I appreciate that this book revolves around an incredibly intelligent and driven woman who proves to all of the men around her that she’s not just a pretty face to be relegated to the secretary pool. This wasn’t a crazy, nail-biting thriller of a mystery, but there were certainly twists and turns that made the ride enjoyable. I’m currently reading the second book in the series, so you know that I really liked it and look forward to seeing where Maggie heads in the future. If you’re looking for a book series to pick up, I definitely recommend this one! It’s well-research, well-written and has a cast of characters I enjoyed getting to know.
