Elin Hilderbrand has summer reads DOWN!
This novel centers around a car crash the night of Nantucket High School’s graduation. The crash left a popular high school student dead, her twin brother in a coma and two others physically unhurt. As the story unfolds and is told by a variety of different characters, we learn about the events leading up to the tragic crash and how each character copes with the aftermath.
Like I said before, Elin Hilderband has writing summer reading books down to a science. I’ve read two other books of hers and liked both. They have all taken place in Nantucket (which screams summer beach read to me) and really make me want to visit to see everything for myself (even though I have it all pictured in my head). I read this book in Italy while we were traveling between cities and during Cecilia’s naps. I moved through it super quickly and only wish I could have been on an Italian beach with an Aperol Spritz in hand 🙂 Even though I said this book screams summer, it revolves around a deep topic and follows the characters on their personal emotional rollercoasters. I enjoyed how the story was told and unraveled and while the characters were incredibly flawed and downright unlikable at some points, I did root for each one and was happy where they ended up. For how turned upside down everyone’s life was during this book, I thought things got wrapped up a little too nicely. Normally this really bugs me, since life doesn’t always wrap up loose ends cleanly, but probably because I was on vacation, I thought it worked fine for this book. If you’re in need of a great beach read or anytime-of-year vacation read, pick this one up!
