Time to review Truly Madly Guilty by Liane Moriarty!
This book was the second book I have read this year as I work toward my 2017 goal of reading 24 books. This was the fourth book I’ve read by Liane Moriarty. The other books of hers I’ve read are What Alice Forgot, Big Little Lies and The Husband’s Secret and I highly recommend them all.
Truly Madly Guilty throws us into the world of three husband/wife couples who are forever linked after a tragic accident happens at a barbecue hosted by one of the couples. This story shuffles back and forth between the present and the day of the barbecue as we read about what transpired and how each character is dealing with the aftermath of the tragedy.
I must say that this was not my favorite Liane Moriarty book – not even close. From the beginning, we knew something terrible happened at the infamous barbecue, but we don’t find out what it is until about three quarters of the way into the book. By that point, there has been so much lead up and so many times where I thought “okay, just tell me what happened at the freaking barbecue already!” that I was just bound to be disappointed by the reveal. This book moved much slower than the other books of hers that I’ve read and, to me, NONE of the characters were remotely likable which made it an even more difficult read. The title of this book is more dramatic than the actual storyline and at the end I felt disappointed because I wanted “more” from the book itself. I didn’t feel any of the drama that was built up between the characters and the whole thing just fell a little flat for me. If you’re a fan of Liane Moriarty, you can give this one a whirl, but if you haven’t read any of her books in the past, I suggest you start with one of the others I mentioned above to get a true feel for her stories and characters.
