Last week we took our first dive into the pool of boxed subscription dinners by trying out Hello Fresh.
I feel like 75% of the people I know have tried out at least one of these types of services, so when my mother-in-law gifted us a week of Hello Fresh, I was excited to see what all the fuss was about.
The registration process was incredibly easy and for the box we were gifted (the Classic Plan with three meals for two people), I was able to choose from a few different menu options for the week. The first available delivery was about about five days after I signed up which worked perfectly for our shopping schedule.
Our Hello Fresh package came early in the day (which was a huge plus) and was delivered right to our door step via UPS. The ingredients for each meal came all neat and packaged in their own individual and clearly labeled boxes and the protein for the week was nice and cold at the bottom of the box.
I peeked inside the box for the meal I would be making that night and instantly fell in love with how clearly everything was labeled and how neatly it was packaged. I also fell in love with the cute tiny bottles of vinegar and the teensy jars of mayo. ADORABLE.
I have heard from friends who have tried other services about how much plastic waste there was for each meal, but I didn’t find that was the case for the meals I picked. The one major bummer in my book, though, was that I had to toss the huge ice packs that came in my box to keep the protein cold. I have friends who have kept some to use in coolers for beach days, but the packs didn’t fit in my freezer so I had to toss them. I would imagine that if you subscribe on a weekly basis, you wouldn’t keep the cold packs every week and they would always get tossed which is a “con” for me, but at the same time I’m not really sure how you would get around it.
Now for the cooking and final products…
The first meal I cooked was the Rapid Crispy Shrimp Tacos with Crunchy Red Cabbage Slaw. I picked it because we love shrimp/fish tacos in our house, but NEVER make them. I actually don’t ever really make fish in our house even though I really like it. The meal came together really fast, used a minimal amount of dishes (HUGE PLUS!) and overall tasted good. The shrimp was great quality and I loved that they were crispy, but not deep fried. I wasn’t a huge fan of the tortillas used, but everything else was of good quality and flavor. I will surely make these again.
The second meal we made (or rather, Travis made) was the Cherry-Drizzled Pork Chops with Couscous Salad. I was so tired and hungry the day we had this meal, that I dug in before I remembered to take a picture, but it was a beautiful dish. The couscous was simple, but tasted really fresh and we both loved the cherry sauce that was drizzled over the pork. I would definitely make the sauce again, but replace the boneless pork chops with a bone thicker bone-in chop or a perfectly cooked tenderloin.
Our last dish was Balsamic Onion Burgers with Crispy Cauliflower Oven Fries. This one was by far our favorite. We loved eating our burgers on a brioche bun and the cauliflower fries were a hit. The beef was also really good quality. We only wished we had enough for leftovers! Just like the others, this tasty meal came together so quickly and was so easy to make.
Overall, I thought the process of ordering was a cinch and the food was really good. It was so nice to not have to shop for three of our meals for the week and I knew each night that once it came time to cook, it was going to be super easy as well. It was also great to try new things for dinner since we can definitely get into a dinner rut around here. Hello Fresh is definitely a service I would recommend to busy families, couples, or singles. There was a good variety of meals to choose from and they all came together so quickly. An added is plus is that while you can only select a certain number of meals from what they have to choose from each week, you get a booklet with all of the week’s recipes, so if there was something you didn’t get to try out, but really wanted to, you have the recipe.
Hello Fresh is definitely something we’ll try again because this round was a huge hit!
