With each passing year, I get more and more excited about Halloween.
You would think that my crazy-for-Halloween days would have been when I was younger, but they weren’t. Sure, I loved to get dressed up in my costume and counted down the minutes until I could go trick-or-treating, but I feel like I get more excited for the holiday as an adult.
Nowadays, I get excited for buying my favorite candy to have in dishes throughout the season, decorating my house in spooky ways, watching scary movies and baking up scary treats to surprise my friends.
My first spooky treat of the season was chocolate cupcakes with vanilla frosting that were topped with spooky chocolate and candy bug treats. They were a huge hit!
Really, does it get any better than Target? Now that I’m older and Halloween prep means more than just picking out my costume, I realize that Target is your one-stop-shop for Halloween. I mean, where else can you get all of your Halloween candy, cute dishes for the candy, a costume and the best Halloween decor under the same roof?
This time of year, Target’s seasonal section has transformed from all things summer and back-to-school to all things Halloween. They have an incredible selection of candy, and that is where I went to pick up the treats I needed to make my “bug bodies.” In addition to using the candy to make my spooky treats, I also have them in cute candy dishes all around my house.
Now, let’s chat about the treats I chose:
First, Skittles are a classic and a favorite of mine. You just can’t lose when you choose Skittles.
Second, Dove Milk Chocolate Ghosts. I picked up two bags of these — one to decorate my cupcake plate (because they make adorable table decorations) and another to have in a candy dish for guests (and me). What’s more festive than these ghosts in a great dish?
And last, but not least, Boo-tterscotch M&Ms. They are incredible. Seriously. Butterscotch can sometimes be a bit overwhelming for me, but not these babies. They are perfection. Is it too much of a Halloween pun to say they are “to die for?”
Okay then, let’s just move on.
To make these spooky treats, you’ll need:
- 1/2 cup of your favorite chocolate, coarsely chopped and melted (I just do this in the microwave in 15 second increments with a quick stir in between each round. It should take about one minute of total microwave time for the chocolate to be completely melted).
- Parchment paper
- A lipped cookie sheet
- A plastic bag to pipe the melted chocolate
- Candy for your bug bodies (Skittles and Boo-tterscotch M&Ms are perfect for this)
While you’re melting your chocolate, grab some parchment paper, cover your cookie sheet and set it aside.
After your chocolate is melted, let it cool for a couple of minutes, then spoon it into a plastic bag.
Next, cut a VERY small hole in one corner of the plastic bag (see above). You don’t want this hole to be too big because then it will be hard to control the melted chocolate while you’re making your bugs.
Now you’re ready to make those spooky little bodies! You can make any type of bug you want, but make sure you get a good mound of chocolate on the bodies where you want to add a Skittle or Boo-tterscotch M&M, so it will “stick.”
Once you’ve piped out all of your bugs, add your candy.
Next, you’re ready to place your little bugs into the fridge to set for at least 20 minutes, but ideally an hour since they will be sturdier the longer they are in there.
When your chocolate is set, you can release the bugs from the parchment by gently placing your hand underneath the paper and lightly pushing up from under the bug. It should release very easily if the chocolate is completely set.
Now you’re ready to decorate your cupcakes, cake or your spooky party table!
To add an extra festive touch, I scattered around some loose Skittles, Boo-tterscotch M&Ms and Dove Milk Chocolate Ghosts on my serving area. That way, your friends can have a little extra munch on some candy while they’re enjoying their spooky treat!
What do you think?!?!
Now it’s your turn to make your own spooky treats at home to scare your friends and family! I, of course, want to see them, so share, share, share!
The Dove Milk Chocolate Ghosts and Boo-tterscotch M&Ms are exclusive to Target, so you won’t be able to find them anywhere else. Before you head out to buy them, be sure to check out this Cartwheel offer at Target, too!
Happy spooky treat-making!
