You know, besides rosé
As I’ve mentioned a few times here before, our former neighborhood was one of the coffee meccas of San Diego. If I needed a little pick-me-up in on a Tuesday afternoon, I popped Cecilia in her stroller and off we went to one of our many coffee shops to get an iced latte. Now that we live in a more suburban and residential neighborhood, getting a good iced latte means putting Cecilia in her carseat (which is not always an easy task), driving 10-15 minutes, getting Cecilia out and then back in the car (again, a not so easy task), and then driving home. Womp, womp.
Since my favorite iced lattes aren’t a quick stroll away anymore, I’ve started drinking the cold brew I make Travis every week. The straight coffee can sometimes be a bit harsh for me, so I’ve been mixing it with some homemade chocolate simple syrup and it’s sooooooo good. It’s like coffee with chocolate milk. What could be better?
I’ve been brainstorming other simple syrups to make for my cold brew and I’m hoping to share them before our world goes pumpkin spice crazy oh-so-soon. Homemade syrups are great for kicking your coffee drinks and cocktails up a notch and they keep in the fridge for a couple of weeks. This syrup also goes well over vanilla ice cream!
Chocolate simple syrup for the win!
Chocolate Cold Brew Coffee with Homemade Chocolate Simple Syrup
Drink recipe yields one drink
FOR THE SIMPLE SYRUP
1 cup water
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup cocoa powder
1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste
1/8 teaspoon salt
FOR THE DRINK
2 ounces homemade chocolate simple syrup (directions below)
6 ounces cold brew coffee
1 ounce half and half
- To make the simple syrup: Combine water and sugar in a small saucepan over medium-high heat and stir until sugar dissolves. Add the remaining ingredients and stir to thoroughly combine. Bring the mix to a boil, then lower the heat to simmer for 10 minutes. While the mix is simmering, be sure to stir it occasionally so it does not burn. Remove from the heat and let the syrup cool completely before storing it in the refrigerator.
- To make your drink: Combine all of the ingredients in a cocktail shaker and shake until the ingredients are combine and chilled, approximately 20 seconds. Pour into a glass with ice and enjoy!
