One of my favorite things to do is visit a family with a new baby.
Soaking up all the baby snuggles has got to be the best thing ever and bringing a meal and any necessities to new parents can go a long way in helping them out when they need it most.
Even though, we had a huge freezer meal prep day before Cecilia was born, after I had her, we still had so many friends stop by to meet her and bring us food and baby gifts and I can’t tell you how incredibly helpful it was. Before I had a baby of my own, I was more interested in holding the new baby than anything else, but now that I’ve had one, I understand how much a visit from a friend can ease the mind of a sleep-deprived new parent.
Here is a list of helpful things to think about taking the next time you’re visiting a family who has recently welcomed a baby:
Healthy breakfast options – I love making these healthy carrot zucchini muffins for new families. When most people think of bringing a meal to a new family, they think about dinner, but breakfast helps, too – especially healthy breakfast options! The best thing about these muffins is that if you make a big batch and the family doesn’t want to eat them all within a few days of receiving them, they freeze perfectly! That way a week down the line, they can pull them out to thaw and have a healthy breakfast or snack option. If you can’t make these muffins before a visit, even a giant bowl of fruit or some whole wheat bagels and cream cheese work perfectly.
Comfort Food Dinners – These go a loooooooong way. I remember when I was nursing like crazy, all I wanted was my favorite comfort food because I was constantly starving. Not only that, but I was also recovering from childbirth, so comfort food made me feel THAT much better. My favorite dinners to make and take to new families are chicken pot pie, skillet lasagna and enchilada casserole. Pair these up with a salad and a light dessert or some fruit and you’ve got yourself an amazing meal. As an extra bonus (if you have time), you can make a second casserole/dish for your friend to freeze and eat once the steady stream of visitors starts to thin out.
Healthy Snacks – As I just mentioned, the first few weeks after Cecilia was born, I was absolutely starving. Travis was great about keeping healthy snacks around the house so we didn’t just binge on chips and junk food during middle of the night feedings or when we were just too tired and hungry to think up something healthy to eat. Things like trail mix bags, nuts and fresh fruit and vegetables were a staple in our house and I’m so grateful.
Baby Items – By the time the baby arrives, the family probably has all of the baby necessities like blankets, clothes and toys. Giving them a quick call to see if you can pick anything up they haven’t thought about, though, goes a long way. We had friends grab an extra box of diapers when one brand we had continually leaked. Diaper cream, baby soap and those types of toiletries are often things you think you won’t need right away so don’t stock up on (or at least that was my case), so having friends ask if they could pick any baby things for us was a big deal and much appreciated.
Favorite Restaurant Meals – Don’t like to cook or don’t have the time? Chances are the new parents craving their favorite meal from their favorite restaurant. Most places let you place to-go orders that you can pick up and deliver personally to your pals. A couple of weeks after Cecilia was born, great friends of ours picked up a bunch of dishes from our favorite dumpling house in town and delivered them to our house. We had been craving those dishes like CRAZY, but not yet confident enough to take our baby out to a loud restaurant, so having friends bring the restaurant to us was the best. This is also a great option for friends or family who live far away, but still want to help them out with a meal. If the restaurant doesn’t deliver, check and see if new parents can swing by and pick up the order or if you can order through a meal delivery service.
These are just a few things that I love to take when I visit a family with a new baby. I’m sure there are more things that can be added to this list, so let me know if I’ve missed anything and what you love to take!
